About Me!
My childhood dreams are coming true.
I vividly remember explaining to my parents how I wanted to be a writer when I was young. And I mean going on long, passionate rants in the car just because they asked what we did at school that day.
At some point “writer” turned into the author of research papers and essays, which then took a turn towards journalism, and eventually ended up at science communication.
This process started in middle school, when we had just begun exploring writing outside of the classic five-paragraph essay format and I was falling in love with all the information I could find and share. Three years later, I’m sitting in my high school AP chemistry class boiling glowsticks thinking that I could grow to love chemistry as much as writing.
So what would it be? Communications or chemistry? Entering my last two years of high school and going through the college application process during COVID, I found myself a bit lost on which path to follow. Luckily, I found a place where I didn’t have to choose: Wheaton College in Norton, Mass.
Here, I spent a year and a half creating my own major in Science Communications. I focused on courses in English, Film and New Media Studies, and (of course) Chemistry. The goal was to craft a course of study that focused on all different genres of written expressions of science.
Science is extremely interesting to me, but also important to everyday decisions, policies, and a healthy life. I wanted to find a way to bring science to the public in a way that was accessible and understandable. Now, I am getting to live out my dream!
What Am I Working On?
I'm currently a senior, double majoring in Chemistry and Science Communications and here are a few things I’m working on!
• I’m in my third year of creating an archival and rhetoric project about the Writing Across the Curriculum program at Wheaton
•I started research in inorganic chemistry focused on Oxygen-donated ligands and lanthanides
•I am studying anti-science rhetoric in the anti-vax movement and how it affects science communication
I can’t wait to expand on my academic experiences as a science communication intern at the Mass General Research Institute!
