Welcome to Research Wrapped for 2021, our annual look back at the year in research at Massachusetts General Hospital. Here are some research highlights from the past twelve months:
Publications and Recognition
This year, we highlighted 300+ studies in high impact journals in which Mass General investigators were either first or last authors. See our Snapshot of Science web page for a month-by month breakdown.
55 highly cited researchers from Mass General were included on Clarivate Analytics’ annual Highly Cited Researchers list for 2021. See the list.
Operations and Funding
Mass General was the #1 independent hospital for research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for 2021, and the eighth largest overall recipient of NIH funds, including university systems. See NIH funding by location and organization.
For the third straight year, research operations at Mass General topped the $1B mark, with $1.179B for FY2021. This represents a 57% increase over the past 10 years.
4,971 grant applications were submitted by Mass General researchers this year, a 5% increase over FY2020 and an all-time record!
The Executive Committee on Research provided $10.3M in institutional support to 97 investigators in 2021. This includes interim support funding, which provides a crucial lifeline to investigators during lapses or delays in their federal funding, as well as awards to support postdoctoral researchers and women scientists who are balancing the dual demands of career and family.
Philanthropy
6 Endowed MGH Research Institute Chairs have been established since the launch of the Mass General Research Institute in 2015. Learn more about our Endowed MGH Research Institute Chairs.
70 MGH Research Scholar awards have now been presented to Mass General investigators, including the five new investigators named to the class of 2021. The philanthropy-supported program provides researchers with $500,000 in unrestricted funding ($100K per year for five years) to support them in pursuing promising new areas of research. Learn more about our MGH Research Scholars.
Communications
Bench Press, the Mass General Research Institute blog, received over 50,000 views in 2021, an average of 150 views per day. Our top story for 2021 was on Zoom Dysmorphia: How Frequent Zoom Calls May Be Changing the Way We See Ourselves.
This year, the MGRI Image Awards showcased 66 research images submitted by investigators from 30 departments, units and centers across Mass General. Our image gallery was seen by approximately 30,000 people on Facebook and received 7,000 likes, comments and shares. See this year’s winners.
Interactions with Industry
51 faculty trainees have now participated in our Bridging Academia and Industry translational research training program, which seeks to foster a new culture of innovation through collaboration. 2021 marked the third year of the program, which is co-taught by faculty from academia and industry. Learn more about Bridging Academia and Industry.
8 challenge-driven research programs have been established through our Strategic Alliance Initiative, encompassing 261 investigators from 21 departments and centers throughout the hospital. The programs, which leverage the hospital’s expertise in biology, technology and medicine, are designed to support long-term, multi-investigator collaborations with industry partners. Learn more about our Strategic Alliances Initiative.
