Identifying Genetic Variants Associated with Common Cardiac Rhythm Disorders
Featuring Lu-Chen Weng, PhD, Shaan Khurshid, MD, MPH, Patrick T. Ellinor, MD, PhD and Steven A. Lubitz, MD, MPH
Bradyarrhythmias are a common cardiovascular disorder where the heart beats at a slower rate and represents a major public health problem, affecting at least 1% of adults over age 65 years.
Experts Share National Guidelines for Evaluating Patients Suspected of Having Alzheimer’s Disease

New guidelines for the diagnostic evaluation of people suspected of having cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders is the first update since 2001 for specialists and the only guideline ever for primary care clinicians.
Comparing the GI Side Effects of Four Medications for Alcohol Use Disorder
Featuring Wei Zhang, MD, PhD
The study analyzed the gastrointestinal (GI) and liver side effects of four medications used to treat alcohol use disorder (AUD): disulfiram, acamprosate, oral naltrexone, and injectable naltrexone. Using data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System, they found that injectable naltrexone had the fewest reported GI and liver-related side effects compared to the other drugs.

Ultrasensitive Test Detects, Serially Monitors Intact Virus Levels in Patients with COVID-19
Featuring Shannon L. Stott, PhD, & Genevieve M. Boland, MD, PhD
Investigators from Mass General Brigham have found that a method originally designed for cancer detection can also identify and monitor even tiny amounts of SARS-CoV-2 intact viral particles in blood and other fluids from patients with acute COVID-19 infections, creating the potential for guiding future treatment of patients.
TB or Not TB? A New Clinician Decision Support Tool for Tuberculosis
Featuring Caitlin Dugdale, MD, MSc, Kimon Zachary, MD and Erica Shenoy, MD, PhD
Researchers developed a TB risk scoring tool by reviewing past patient data and then integrated the tool into the electronic health record with the label “TB or Not TB.” The tool helps clinicians assess, once their TB workup is complete and apparently negative, whether infection control precautions can be discontinued, ensuring accurate decisions for TB isolation, alleviating workload and improving patient experience.
