Individualized Cancer Therapy Demonstrates Safety and Sustained Immune Responses
Featuring Justin Gainor, MD
A study led by researchers at Mass General Brigham has found that an individualized cancer therapy tailored to the unique tumor profiles of patients with melanoma and lung cancer was well-tolerated and boosted immune activity
Increasing Clinicians’ Knowledge About Climate Change’s Impact on Health and Healthcare Sustainability
Featuring Wynne Armand, MD and Ann-Christine Duhaime, MD
Physicians at an academic medical center completed surveys about climate change-focused educational modules related to health and sustainability in healthcare offered through an existing biannual quality incentive program. Most respondents thought that the modules were relevant or very relevant to their lives and clinical practices, and that their knowledge on these topics increased after completing the modules. Perceptions of the modules’ relevance varied by physicians’ demographics and specialties.
Low-dose carbon monoxide may explain the paradoxical reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease among smokers
Featuring Stephen Gomperts, MD, PhD
Smoking has consistently been associated with a reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease, raising the possibility that some factors of cigarette smoke confer protection. Researchers found that treating lab models of PD with low doses of carbon monoxide—comparable to the exposure experienced by people who smoke—protected against neurodegeneration and prevented the accumulation of a key disease-related protein. The findings support further investigation into low-dose CO and the pathways it modifies to slow disease progression in PD.
